Funding Opportunities to Support Green Buildings Initiatives

Costs can present a significant challenge implementing your sustainable building. There are various incentive, grant, and rebate programs available that can help alleviate some of the up-front financial burdens so you can enjoy the long-term benefits of a high-performing building. There are programs available for home-owners, organizations, municipalities alike. Refer to the following incomplete list of programs available to the Bow Valley. Federal Funding

Canada Green Homes Initiative

  • $125 to $5,000 grants to recover costs re: home retrofits

  • Up to $600 for EnerGuide evaluations

  • $5,000-$40,000 interest-free loans, 10 year term

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

  • A low-interest financing option for retrofits, for property owners in Alberta make repayments go through your property tax bill

  • CEIP applies to the property, not the owner

  • Currently available in 12 Alberta municipalities (Calgary, Edmonton, Banff, Canmore, etc.)

  • Webpage contains information for

    • Residential properties

    • Commercial properties

    • Contractors

Federation of Canadian Municipalities - Green Municipal Fund

  • Grants available for municipal environmental projects

  • Loans are also available to municipalities; commonly topped up with a grant of up to 15%

  • Funding for

    • Plans, studies, pilot projects, capital projects

    • Asset Management Grants and Partner Grants

  • All municipal governments and partners are eligible to apply

The Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program

The Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program is a national merit-based Program with the objective of improving the availability and condition of community buildings in Canadian communities experiencing higher needs and who are currently underserved.

  • The program goes until March, 2029.

  • Both retrofits, upgrades, and new buildings are applicable. 

Provincial Funding

Municipal Climate Change Action Centre

  • Provides capacity building for municipal staff

  • Resource Centre provides information and data on energy efficiency, etc. 

  • Funding available for energy audits and retrofit projects

Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) - Energy Savings for Business

  • Helps Alberta businesses improve their efficiency and reduce emissions by funding cost and energy-saving technologies

  • Currently fully subscribed – waitlist exists

Alberta Ecotrust Foundation – Climate Innovation Grant Program

  • Funding applicable to Calgary or Edmonton only connected to Low Carbon Cities Canada 

  • Grant streams include Building better, retrofitting wiser, renewable energy

Alberta Ecotrust Retrofit Accelerator Program

The program will provide free coaching services to help overcome challenges when it comes to prioritizing sustainable building upgrades barriers and guide participants through the entire retrofit process. Including:

  • Day-to-day assistance throughout retrofit planning, design and implementation.

  • Developing retrofit plans tailored to unique needs, barriers and budgets.

  • Identifying ways to integrate retrofits into a building’s regular upkeep schedule.

  • Uncovering the benefits and potential cost-savings associated with retrofits.

  • Exploring various funding, financing and grant options.

  • Providing partial funding for studies like energy assessments and business case development.

  • Residential Energy efficiency rebates

  • Commercial properties environmental efficiency rebates

  • Solar incentives (Residential and Commercial)

Town of Canmore Environmental Rebates

  • Solar incentives (Residential and Commercial)
