Practical Solutions to Real World Problems: Building With Wildfire in Mind
2:00pm - 3:30
Workshop Session C
In light of the recent devastation caused by wildfires in places like Jasper, Lytton, and beyond, the need for collaboration with the construction industry has never been more crucial. This presentation features display models, interactive discussions, and real-world examples of how wildfire-resilient building practices are being implemented in the construction industry. Discover how practical solutions can significantly reduce the broader impact on communities.
Hear implemented examples from Jason Hoerle of Exshaw Mountain Gateway, as he provides a first-hand account of how his development project has integrated FireSmart best practices for construction and landscaping into its architectural and landscape guidelines. For meaningful change to occur, these concepts must be embraced by the construction and development community. With rising building costs and challenges in product availability, achieving wildfire resilience depends heavily on the commitment of those within these sectors. Join us in being part of the solution as we work towards building wildfire resiliency in Alberta.
Scott VanderMeer
Owner of VDM Fire Inc
Scott has been collaborating with the developer of the Exshaw Mountain Gateway project on behalf of FireSmart Canada with the goal of integrating FireSmart Development Best Practices into the architectural and landscape guidelines set out by the developer. This proactive approach to FireSmart has led to the national discussion on the creation of a FireSmart Developer Recognition Program. Scott VanderMeer has been involved in numerous FireSmart projects and continues to be an active member on FireSmart Canada’s Technical Committee and FireSmart Canada’s Program Implementation Working Group. While continuing as an active member of the Calgary Fire Department, Scott combines his structural fire knowledge, along with former wildfire experience to provide advice on wildland urban interface education and mitigation.
Jason Hoerle
Owner/Developer Exshaw Mountain Gateway
Exshaw Mountain Gateway is a residential subdivision development currently in the approvals stage. The project entails 42 single family lots and two multifamily lots for sale where lot buyers select their own home builder. Jason Hoerle is the owner/developer and has lived in the Bow Valley since 1992. Exshaw Mountain Gateway has been working with VDM Fire Inc. and FireSmart Canada on a pilot program where land developers would be able to achieve FireSmart recognition status for implementing protocols. EMGI is also implementing WildSmart landscaping guidelines and FloodSmart best practices into the SWMP with McElhanney Engineering. These efforts and standards lead to a more resilient development and future community.
